Asphalt shingles are the most widely used home roof coverings in Texas. The reason is that they provide a number of benefits like protection against sun, rain and other climatic conditions. They are also cheap and very easy to install.

Asphalt shingles are made from a slightly flexible material. It consists of a fiberglass backing that in turn provides support to the entire piece. The asphalt coating over this fiberglass provides endurance against water and also supports the mineral grit that constitutes the surface of the shingle. Nowadays, these grits are available in different colors that not only look good, but also provide protection against sun and snow damage.

Texas Weather And Shingles

Residents of Texas would know that the place experiences two of the most damaging weather conditions for roofs: hail and strong wind. The battering hail alone can cause the shingles to break or become brittle. As for the wind, it can lift or cause the shingles to loosen out and eventually come apart. Therefore, the Texas Department Of Insurance recommends home owners to choose asphalt shingles that comply with ASTM D 7158 Class H or ASTM D 3161 Class F.

Shingles According To Roof Slope

There is also a preferred method of installing these shingles. It is advised that at a layer of underlayment along with at least a layer of felt are used for roofs with slopes 2:12 to 4:12. For those roofs with a higher slope one layer of felt is sufficient. Property owners with flat roofs should never use asphalt shingles. To minimize shingle loss during high winds, 12 gauge stainless steel nails (3/8 inch diameter) should be used. Some roofing contractors might pitch you the idea of using staples. Although cheaper, it will not provide a grip strong enough to withstand high winds.

Alternates To Asphalt Shingles

There are some roofs on which asphalt shingles cannot be used. At the same time some house owners simply opt for other materials that offer more benefits. Popular alternates include wooden shingles, metal roofs, tile roofs and more. Each of these offers different advantages that may be in terms of durability, cost, scalability and more. In any case, it is best to consult a professional roofer for the best choice of roofing for your house.
