Considering the pros and cons of a metal roof before installing it in your home is essential. Gather all the relevant information before you make a final decision. Take a closer look here at the benefits and drawbacks of a metal roof:

Benefits

Long Lasting: One of the biggest advantages of a metal roof is its life. Metal roofs usually last as long as the house. They are not affected by severe weathers, such as high winds, extreme snow or rain. Companies producing metal roofs guarantee their products for 20 to 50 years and the paint finishes have a 30 year limited warranty.

Weight: Tiles weigh up to 750 pounds per square and concrete tiles weigh approximately 900 per square. As compared to these two materials, metal roofs are lightweight. Most of the metals weigh approximately 50 to 150 pounds per square. Metal roofs are also preferred over an existing roof for support purposes and to protect from wear and tear.

Fire resistance: Metal roofs are incombustible which is why they are classified as the most resistant material, and rated Class A in fire rating. If metal roofs are used on top of roofing materials, such as wood shingles, they are rated as Class C in fire rating, because wood shingles are combustible.

 Drawbacks

Cost: One of the major disadvantages of installing a metal roof is its cost! Metal roofing’s initial cost equals to other premium materials and ranges from approximately $150 to $600 per square. However, considering the durability of the material, you may invest in this roof because you will save money in the long term.

Denting: Metal roof will dent if heavy hailstones fall on it, just like your car will dent if a golf ball hits it. Metals such as aluminum and copper are much softer than steel and are prone to denting. Some people, assuming the toughness of the material, walk on metal roofs. But you shouldn’t! Though metals are tough, they can get extremely slippery when wet. Avoid getting into trouble and damaging your roof!

Maintenance: Maintenance of metal roofs is tricky and costly. Some types of painted metal roof finishes, chip, peel, fade, chalk or fade; however, all metals are guaranteed for 30 years. Also, walking on some types of roofs, especially the ones with a granulated stone surface may cause wear. The installation process must thus, be carried out carefully to avoid any type of damage later on.
